Better Late Than Never

After a very promising start on the garden this year despite having to start from scratch, circumstances were such that our early momentum got stalled and we found ourselves coming into July with a long list of seeds still waiting to be planted. Some, we will just have to forego this year, I think, but others got their start yesterday. Jim had the day off for the 4th, and we had no other plans. So, despite being in the middle of the hottest week of the summer so far, we spent most of yesterday outside tilling, digging and planting: drying beans, green beans, millet, wheat and corn. We ended the day hot, sweaty, dirty messes, but with a sense of accomplishment that was most welcome. As was the power coming back on in time for some refreshing showers before bed.

(Top picture is the newly tilled portion, with wheat, millet and corn. If you look very closely in the top right, next to the ornamental grass, you can see a naughty chicken feasting on the millet seed. Bottom picture is the newly dug and planted row of drying and green beans, with carrots to the left and peppers to the right.)
