You Know You're A Homesteader When...

You know you're a homesteader when, awakened at 1:30 a.m. by a pack of howling and yipping coyotes that sound like they are in the back yard, instead of rolling over, putting the pillow over your head and trying to get back to sleep, you jump out of bed to look out the window. Ask your spouse, "we locked up the chickens, right?", then both head (stumblingly) for the headlamp and out to the coop to make sure the defenses are tight.

They were, minus two birds. Two very lucky birds who found a hidden spot under a tarp just outside the coop wall to roost and were returned safely to their sisters.

Stumble back to bed.

Nothing like a predator-induced adreneline rush in the middle of the night.

And a note: there has been much going on around here lately, so much that it has been hard to keep on top of the updates. Stay tuned, though, for some to come (hopefully) soon about honey, chickens, roofs, and more.
