Books

I love books. I always have. When I was little, I would routinely read multiple books at a time, switching back and forth, because I just couldn't decide which one to start first. I have wonderful memories of being read to: of talking my dad into reading Grimms Brothers tales; of coming home from school and eating toast slathered in butter and cinnamon sugar while my mom read chapters in countless books to me. I can't seem to help myself from requesting stacks of books from the library even now, when my ability to find the time to read is at an all-time low. There is just something that is magical, comforting, inspiring about holding a new book, full of potential, a book in progress I can't put down, a book I've finished but am not ready to part with quite yet.

I'm lucky, or perhaps it's genetic, that Garrett and Drew love books, too. (An excuse for me to pour through even more books!) We've been reading to them since they were tiny, and it is part of our days. We pile on the couch with stacks of books and they often amaze me at their perseverance.

We usually make it to one of our favorite libraries at least once a week and spend a good portion of the morning at storytime or just hanging out in the kids' section. The boys play or bring me books to read, and we always leave with a new stack in hand. I love these excursions. I love that they get excited about a trip to the library. I love that they (mostly Drew) so often choose to pick books off the stack one after another and have me read, cozied up in the oversized armchairs that just fit the three of us (for now...). And that they are big enough that they want to pick out books for themselves and check them out.

I hope that this will be a lasting love for them. I hope that as they grow so will their love of reading. And I hope that they will call me to the couch to curl up and read to them for many years to come.

Pictures are from our trip to the "storytime" library today. Also, there is now a kids book section in the references with a list of some of our favorite kids books to date.
